Markanda is a small river situated in Nahan area of the district of Sirmaur. It starts from the Southern side of the lower Himalayas that is situated on the Western extremity of the valley named Kiarda dun (Paonta) valley. The hills of Nahan in lower Himalayan side exist on the right side of the valley of Markanda and less steep Shivalik hills are situated on its left wing. It is a raging river and has very little flux in summer and winter months but elevates suddenly in the monsoon.
