Given M.P of an item = Rs. 400
M.P for 5 items = 400*5 = Rs. 2000..[since she bought 5 items]
Discount on 1 item = 6%
S.P of this item = M.P(100-d)/100 = 400*94/100 = 376
Discount = 24 Rs.
Discount on next 4 items = 24%
S.P of 1 item = 400*76/100 = 304 rs.
S.P of 4 items = 4*304 = 1216
Discount on 4 items = 1600 - 1216 = 384
[You can also directly apply the formula M.P*d/100 instead of M.P*(100-d)/100 and hence, find the discounts directly rather than finding S.P using the latter formula]
Total discount (on 5) = 24 + 384 = 408
Total M.P (5 items) = 2000
Effective discount% = Discount/M.P * 100 = 408/2000 * 100 = 20.4%
Hope it helps
