mass is a physical quantity because we have gotten into the bad habit of treating mass and weight as if they were the want thing. Mass is physical quantity. It is the actual amount of stuff that exists within an object. Weight on the other hand is how much force is created when gravity interacts with a mass. Outside of science we often say mass when we mean weight so in the teaching of science we have begun to specify and explain the difference before using the terms.

Important point. Mass does not change. It is a constant value for a given item that is the same no matter where the object is or how it is being manipulated. Weight depends on gravity in the locality of the object and also how much accelerated motion the object is experiencing.
