Thanatopsis' is written for the purposes of encouragement for humanity. The title comprises of two words namely,  'Thanatos,' meaning  'death,' and 'opsis, that  means 'view,' so 'Thanatopsis' actually understood as  'a view of death.'

The poem has just that meaning, a view of death; in this case, from the viewpoint of an optimistic angle.

The poet describes us that we should consider what nature has tells us about death and dying and then proceeds to describe how death is experienced by everybody, irrespective to status, and should, therefore, be considered as something to be embraced instead of becoming afraid.
