I have always had a problem with tact. I always end up saying the wrong things at the wrong time.
My parents had planned an elaborate birthday party for my sister. Her birthday was falling on her graduation day and they wanted to surprise her. My sister loved surprises and my only responsibility was picking up the cake and keeping the party a secret.
I’d just ordered the cake and was returning home with a friend. I saw my sister sitting at the dining table with my mother. It just didn’t strike me that the cake was for her. In a matter of fact tone, I told her “Remind me to pick up the cake tomorrow. It’s vanilla and strawberry.” As soon as I uttered the words, I saw my mother’s expression change. I froze and all I could think of was, “Me and my big mouth!”
