meaning of couplet - tis with our judgments as our watches , none go just alike, yet each believes his own
Answers
The above mentioned famous couplet is from the mighty pen of great English poet and essayist Alexander Pope (1688 to 1744). The couplet comes from his well known essay titled An Essay on Criticism. Pope wants to point out the fact that the value judgments of persons are of great significance to them for we trust our own opinions as we trust our own watches in comparison with the others.
Through this couplet, the writer has beautifully depicted a universal truth; the writer here explains that each human being loves to stick to his/her own belief and forms subjective judgement about a person, place, thing, or situation; this judgement is as varied as the time given by watches worn by different people. And each human being thinks, his/her judgement is right.
