Midway: a part of a fair, Circus etc. Where there are games of skill and other type of entertainment.
In the poem The bangle sellers by Sarojini Naidu, how do the middle-aged women spend their lives? Is there any inner significance of this mention?
According to the poet Sarojini Naidu in her poem The Bangle Sellers, the middle-aged women who have ‘journeyed through life midway’ rearing their fair sons with love and care, now spend their lives serving their households with pride and praying together with their husbands.
This is a reference to the traditional Indian culture and how Indian women are dedicated to the well-being of their family and how they care for their households.
The whole life of middle-aged women is depicted in the poem. It somewhat tells us that women who have raised fair sons only but not daughters with love and care are worthy of the gold and purple coloured bangles.
We cannot blame the poet but the stereotypes of her time which led to this writing. Or we should simply take sons as an offspring.
The women who have journeyed the life midway have fulfilled their household duties with pride and commitment and showed devotion to god for their husbands and children.
This shows the love and respect of Indian women for their family.
