• Twinkling of star occur due to atmospheric refraction of starlight
• Starlight, on entering the earth's atmosphere, undergoes refraction continuously before it reaches the earth
• As the optical density of air increase towards surface of the earth, light from the star travels from rare to denser layers, bending every time towards the normal.
• On producing the final refracted ray backwards, we find that the apparent position of the star is higher than the actual position of the star.
• Due to continuous change in the direction of propagation of light, the apparent position of the star fluctuate all the time and the amount of starlight entering the eye flickers, i.e., the brightness of the star changes continuously. This is called the twinkling of a star
