Thyroid Hormone Receptors and Mechanism of Action. Receptors for thyroid hormones are intracellular DNA-binding proteins that function as hormone-responsive transcription factors, very similar conceptually to the receptors for steroid hormones. Thyroid hormones enter cells through membrane transporter proteins.

Thyroid gland is located in the thorat region. It produces hormone called thyroxine.

Thyroxine regulates the metabolic rate and growth, stimulates respiration.

Too little of thyroxine makes a person sleepy and sluggish and cause an increase in body weight.

Too much secretion of thyroxine increses the rate of respiration and makes the person lose weight.
