Media influence on teenagers can be deliberate – for example, advertising is often directed at children and teenagers. This means that children and teenagers are increasingly conscious of brands and images. You’re not alone if your child has pestered you to buy the next ‘in’ thing!

Media influence can also be more indirect. An example of this might be the increasing sexualisation of content in advertising, magazines, television shows and music videos. These media products often show ‘sexy’ women with unrealistic body types. Other kinds of media feature violent imagery and coarse language – for example, video games and song lyrics.

These indirect media influences can suggest to teenagers that these are ‘normal’ ways to look and behave.

But being exposed to media influence, images and messages doesn’t automatically mean your child is at risk. Teenagers don’t just take on board everything the media – or anybody else – tells them. They can be savvy consumers of media messages.

The word media means the medium by which one can convey the message to a large number of people.Media is of two types - electronic media and print media. The messages we get from electronic gadgets is called electronic media. The information we get through newspapers, books and magazines is called print media.

With the rapid development in technology, the media has reached almost every house. It is playing a vital role in moulding young minds. Media is inseparable from teenagers. Teenagers are naturally curious and media can lead teenagers in their journey of life. Most teenagers spend hours on watching television playing video games and socializing on internet on various social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter Socializing is a skill which teenagers must learn but socializing is rather making them lose their confidence, Psychologists warn that social media sites have a worst effect on teenagers who are already suffering from low confidence .It is also proved that children spending too much time online lack interpersonal skills which are necessary for achieving success in life .Another negative effect that has been noted in teenagers is an increase in violence and aggression. Violence in video games becomes reality for them and they are unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

The exposure of some media also has an effect of adoption of risky behaviour by teenagers like smoking and drinking. Teens see their favourite movies and TV stars smoking and often try to imitate them. Certain types of music like Hip Hop also have negative impacts. Many artists rap about violence and the lyrics of such songs which contribute to violence of the nature of teenagers. Teens should be made aware of these negative effects. They must realise that the media is a tool and it depends on us how we use it. Media should remain a tool to encourage and inspire teens to develop skills not to worsen skills on them.
