Answer:

White matter is a component of the central nervous system, in the brain and spinal cord.

The white matter is placed on the grey matter in the brain while it lies outer to the grey matter in the spinal cord.

It consists mainly of nerve fibers with their myelin sheaths. It transmits signals from one region of the cerebrum to another and between the cerebrum and lower brain centers.

In contrast, the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of non-myelinated nerve cell bodies and branching dendrites is the grey matter.

The function of grey matter is to route sensory or motor stimuli to interneurons of the CNS in order to create a response to the stimulus through chemical synapse activity.
