Megasthenes was a Greek citizen, who visited India during the reign of the emperor Chandragupta Maurya, in the 4th century B.C. He even stayed in the kingdom for a while as part of an agreement between Chandragupta Maurya and Selucus Nikator. Being Nikator’s ambassador, Megasthenese took keen interest in the functioning of the court at Patliputra and wrote detailed accounts of the political scenario and life in general, in his book Indika. His writings are considered as valuable historical information.
