                                   Infectious Disease

• Definition: A contagious disease, disorder or a pathogenic condition caused by microorganisms like bacteria, virus, fungi or parasites.
• Mode of action: Pathogenic microorganisms invade the host’s living body, multiplies, may produce toxins, invade and damage the host tissues.
• Mode of spread: air, person to person contact, contaminated water or food
• General symptoms: include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, chills, headache, weight loss etc.
• Examples: Common cold, chickenpox, measles, cholera, AIDS, hepatitis etc.

                                Non-Infectious Disease

• Definition: A non-contagious disease caused by environmental causes or toxins, lifestyle factors, heredity or gene mutations.
• Mode of action: Varied.
• Mode of spread: Not contagious and does not spread from person to person but in case of hereditary disease it can be passed on from one generation to another
• General symptoms: Varied.
• Examples: Cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, lupus, allergies, autoimmune diseases, cystic fibrosis, etc.
