Algae are used in Wastewater Treatment facilities, reducing the need for greater amounts of toxic chemicals than are already used. Algae can be used to capture fertilizers in runoff from farms. When subsequently harvested, the enriched algae itself can be used as fertilizer.

  1. Many species of marine algae such as Sargassum, and Laminaria are edible and thus can be eaten. *Chlorella and Spirulina are used as food supplements being rich in proteins.
  2. Agar is used in the preparation of jellies and ice-cream.
  3. Many red algae such as Corallina are used in treating worm infections.
