India exported food grains, figs, sugar, spices, cotton and silk to the West, during the ancient times. Traders exported their commodities by overland route as well as by sea route.
China’s main exports to the West were silk, porcelain articles and tea. All three items were considered exotic and exquisite and were in much demand at that time. These items were mainly transported overland, by the Silk Road which connected the East to the West.
