The four features of the Local Self Government are as follows:

1. The minimum age to contest elections on the local level is 21 years as all the levels.
2. Reservations are provided to the SCs, STs, and women. About 33.3% of seats are reserved for women in the local self-government. If the state decides then reservations can be provided to Backward classes as well.
3. All the representatives of the local bodies are elected directly. The 'panch' of the gram panchayat is elected by the procedure set by the state. They are not political elections.
4. Elections are to be conducted within 6 months after the vacation of a seat.
