Gandhi worked a lot for the upliftment of the depressed classes of India :

1. He opposed untouchibility and argued that there is no mention of untouchibity in Shastras.

2. He advocated the inter-caste marriage and accordingly married his adopted untouchable girl Laxmi with a brahmin boy Maruti in 1933.

3. He started the publication of a weekly journal called Harijan in which he discussed the social problems of India. More importantly he called the untouchables as harijans i.e sons of God.
