It is believed that cotton is India ' s home plant. It is the raw material for cotton industry. It grows best in black cotton soil of Deccan plateau. It requires high temperature, light rainfall ,210 frost free days and bright sunshine. Major cotton producing states are Maharastra, Gujarat, Karnataka, TN, AP, Punjab, UP.

India is the second leading producer of cotton after China.
