The major characteristics of the genes are as follows,

 1.    Genes are functional units of DNA which get translated into required protein molecules that are involved in the cellular mechanism. Only 2% of the entire chromosomal DNA is considered as genes as they are the only units that are translated to protein.

 2.    They carry the genetic information from one generation to another, to produce a healthy offspring that is in a relationship with the environment.
