Traditionally any document, record, or text inscribed by hand is known as the Manuscript.

The main shortcomings of a manuscript in the 19th century are the following:

1. The handwritten manuscripts could not assist the expanding market for copies.

2. They could not be simply replicated, as copying was expensive, labor and time-consuming work.

3. Manuscripts were not designed by its contents, which may merge the written text with maps, pictures, numerical calculations etc.
