Sir Dietrich Brandis was a German-British botanist and forestry academic and administrator, who worked with the British Imperial Forestry Service in colonial India for nearly 30 years.

Brandis, along with the British government took a few steps and measures to conserve and manage forests in India.

1. Brandis set up the Indian Forests Services in 1864. The people were trained in the science of forest conservation.

2. Felling of trees and grazing was restricted and the forests were preserved for timber production. There were rules for this and whoever went against these rules were punished.
