The Trento Council was a systematic reaction by the Roman Catholic to Protestant Reformation's doctrinal challenges. The goal was to define Catholic doctrine and make comprehensive decrees about self-reform that helped revitalize the Roman Catholic Church against the Protestant development.

Explanation:

The Council had condemned what they defined as heresies by proponents of Protestantism, had issued important statements as well as clarifications on the doctrine and teachings of the Church, including scripture, the Biblique canon, sacred tradition, joriginal sin, justification, sacraments,  salvation, the mass &  veneration of saints. Some of the key decisions that were taken were

  • To condemn the "principles and doctrines of Protestantism" and to "clarify the "doctrines of the Catholic Church" on all disputed points
  • To make a discipline or administration reform. This was a cause that the reforming Councils had set out in and was lightly referred to under "Pope Julius II" by the "5th-Lateran Council". One of the many causes of the Reformation was the corruption in the management of the Church.
  • The Church is the Scriptural ultimate interpreter. The "history of the Bible" (a history that made up part of the Catholic faith) and the Church is both authoritative and separate.
  • Following a controversy over Luther 's doctrine of "justification by faith alone," the connection between faith and works of salvation was defined.
  • Other Catholic practices which drew reformers' ire, such as indulgences and pilgrimages, worship of saints and relics, and veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, were reaffirmed, although they were prohibited to be abused.
  • Theologians and writers subsequently amplified decrees concerning  religious art & sacred music in order to condemn a number of Renaissance, medieval styles and iconography, with a major influence on the development of these forms of art.
