Meristematic tissue has a number of defining features, including small cells, thin cell walls, large cell nuclei, absent or small vacuoles, and no intercellular spaces. The apical meristem (the growing tip) functions to trigger the growth of new cells in young seedlings at the tips of roots and shoots and forming buds.

The most main feature of meristem that sets them apart from permanent tissue is that they divide. They ensure the growth and differentiation of the plant. They are of three types.

Apical - They are present at the tip of the shoot and root (apex), and ensure the growth in height both up and down.

Intercalary - They are present in the middle of the plant.

Lateral - They are present at the sides and ensure increase in girth/width of the plant.
