The main features of bombay city during colonial period.
☆ More than 70% of the working people of bombay lived in thickly populated chawls. These chawls were multi-storeyed structure which was divided into smaller one-room tenement which have not private toilets.
☆ The house were very small, so Street and neighbourhood were used for a variety of activities like, cooking, washing, sleeping.
☆ These house were largely owned by private landlords like merchant, bankers and building contractors. Who wanted quick money from migrant.
☆ The rich parsi, Muslim and upper caste trader and industrialists of bombay lived in sprawling specious bungalows.
