As with other European colonists — the British and the Dutch, the French too started their colonization through commercial activities. The first French factory in India was established at Surat in 1668 and later one at Machillipatnam. But they were driven out by the Dutch and the British by 1720.

They landed in the Indian subcontinent on August 24, 1608, at the port of Surat. Mughal emperor Jahangir granted a Farman to Captain William Hawkins permitting the English to erect a factory at Surat in 1613.
