In chromatin, those protein which remain after the histone proteins are called non histone proteins. Scaffold proteins, DNA polymerase, heterochromatin protein 1 and polycomb are the non histone proteins. The Non histone proteins have three important roles in maintaining structure of chromosomes during cell division. These are (1) chromosome condensation
(2) sister chromatid separation at the metaphase: anaphase transition and (3) interaction between chromosomes and cytoskeletons during formation of mitotic spindles and cleavage furrow.
