Health workers derive BOD because in many cases organic molecules are found associated with pollution, such as the harmful discharge of a sewage treatment plant.
Previously it was called C.R.A.P. (Carbon-Rich Aggregate Particles).
Such chemicals consume oxygen as they get broken down by bacterial processes.
Measuring BOD of a water body is a test to detect the contamination in that water body.
