.Dravidian basically denotes inhabitants of southern India who speak Dravidian languages mainly Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam, Kannada and Tulu.. Eighty six languages have been classified as Dravidian. They spread out and cover parts of India, South Western Iran, South Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Dravidians are believed to inhabit India even before Indo-Aryan invasion. There is a mention of Dravns even in Vedas and Puranas and Manu, as per Matsya Purana, is believed to be a Dravidian king, Satyavrata. There are traditions that make the Dravidians the descendants of Vedic rishis and kings, but those that make the Aryans of north India descendants of Dravidian kings. The two cultures are so intimately related.
During the long Islamic rule in India, south India became the land of refuge for Vedic culture and to a great extent remains so till date. The best Vedic chanting, rituals and other traditions are preserved in South India. Shaivism and Vaishnavism both are practiced by Dravidians.
Along with languages, the music and dance forms also vary from the north to the south. Carnatic music and dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi bring richness to the culture.
