age of fossils is determined by the method of carbon dating or radiometric dating based on the fact that each radioactive isotope has its half life. for example the half life of uranium 238 is 4.5 billion years and final decay product is lead. thus by measuring proportion of parent radioactive material to decay products in a rock sample we can find its age. also dating with radioactive carbon can also be used. recently potassium argon method been used to determine age of hominid fossil.
