Ideally the longitudinal profile of a river is concave with a steep upper portion near the source, giving way to reaches of progressively less gradient as the mouth is approached. Other features of the river are associated with this progression. The bed material becomes finer the shallower the gradient, and because of the increasing amount of water carried by the river channel this usually becomes wider from source to mouth. Many systems of classification based on the physical characteristics of the river channel and the biological composition of the associated fauna have been proposed to describe the various reaches of the system, some of which have been summarized by Illies and Botosaneanu (1963). Such systems may recognize several different sub-divisions of the river course, but usually make a primary distinction between the steep and torrential upper course (or “rhithron”) and the flat, slow-flowing lower course (or “potamon”).
