Any person aged above seven who can read, write and speak a language is considered a literate.

• There is a 50% difference between literacy rate of males and females.

• Where some states have literacy as high as 96% there are other states which barely touch 30% like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

• In 1951, only 18% of the India's population was literate and it has reached to 65% in the year 2001.
