During the Mughal period,it as the major city of business and trade from sea route but towards the end of the 17th century, Surat began to decline because later the Mughal Empire was also declined and it lost market and productivity and Portuguese controlled over the sea routes and because East India Company shifted its headquarters to Mumbai.
