A pressure group is a group which maintains a pressure over the government for their personal cause and agenda. It tries to influence the public policy by maintaining pressure over the government/state. 


An interest group is a group which tries to influence the public policy of the government for the welfare of the society and the people.They are also known as advocacy groups. 

The relationship between pressure groups and interest groups is that they both want and try to influence the public policy. However, for different purposes. Both tend to put the government under public pressure.

Pressure Groups:

  • Pressure groups are institutions that tend to influence the policies of the government and therefore act as a check on the functioning of the government.

  • The government can often bend under high pressure from small groups of rich and powerful people.

Interest groups:

  • The interest groups are the private organizations that are formed to influence the public policies, they are non-political in nature and their aims are to uphold their own interest.
  • In democratic systems the political parties represent the interest of different groups. These different interest groups work towards influencing political parties.
  • When interest groups feel that their interests are not been considered by the ruling political party they move to form the alternative party or build pressure on the ruling political parties.
