Mention the significance of the sporophyte of Anthoceros

Anthoceros is a genus belonging to the family Anthocerotaceae.  This genus is omnipresent and consists of hornworts which means 'flower horn'.

The sporophyte of Anthoceros has various feautures:-

1. They are horn-shaped sporophytes.

2. Zygote oospore is the first cell of sporophyte generation

3. Sporogonium is borne on the gametophyte.

4. Mature sporophyte or sporangium is an exact cylindrical structure. It has bulbous foot and is a smooth slender, erect cylindrical capsule.

5. The sporophyte produces the spores in the capsule.

6. The spores are dark gray, dark brown or black,
