There have been many steps undertaken by numerous governments to improve the position of women in India. This is an issue that has seen parties cross party lines to work together on issues that help all the women of India. Since independence, there have numerous policies and initiatives instituted, and events that have transpired. Some of the prominent features are:
· Incorporation of provision for special facilities for women and children in the Indian Constitution itself, despite the Fundamental Right of Equality for everyone.
· Guaranteeing equality of rights to all women. Extending franchise to all women across the country, regardless of any other factor.
· Passage of the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961, allowing women to take a paid leave of 12 weeks when undergoing childbirth, to better take care of mothers and children.
· Passage of the Equal Remuneration Act in 1973, guaranteeing equaling pay to women and men who work the same hours. Prohibiting gender discriminatory pay differences in the workplace.
· Creation of Hindu Succession and Marriage Acts, Muslim Marriage Acts (recently passage of Triple Talaq Bill) and Special Marriages Act.
· Setting up of the Rational Commission for Women in 1992.
· Undertaking progressive policies like National Policy for the Empowerment of Women in 2001, Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace in 2003.
· Rise of strong-headed and influential female Politicians like Maneka Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Sushmita Dev, Dr Nowhera Shaik, etc. Who have been bringing issues affecting women to the forefront since time immemorial.
· Rise of Politicial Parties that focus on women empowerment and enfranchisement. Parties like the All India Mahila Empowerment Party. That are working hard to ensure more women not only get heard in the political circles but also gain their rightful place as legislators.
