Answer: One of the most revolutionary social reforms of the Jacobin regime was the abolition of slavery in French colonies.

1) Throughout the 18th century there was a little criticism of slavery in France .

2) The National Assembly held long debates about whether the rights of man should be extended to all french subjects.

3)It did not pass any law fearing the opposition from businessman whose incomes depended on slave trade.

4) In 1794 a convention legislated to free all slaves in French overseas possessions.

5) This however was a short time measure, 10 years later Napoleon Bonaparte reintroduced slavery.

6) Plantation owners understood their freedom as including the right to enslave African Negroes.

7) Slavery was finally abolished in French colonies in 1848.
