The backbone of plasma membrane is formed of phospholipid bilayer in which polar heads are present on the either side of the membrane and hydrophobic (lipid chains) tails are embedded inside the membrane.

Other major components of the plasma membrane are proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates (it forms glycolipids and glycoproteins).

Proteins are present as Integral or transmembrane and peripheral proteins in the plasma membrane. Proteins form channels and may also help in forming membrane bound receptors.

Cholesterol is present as embedded between phospholipids. They help in regulating the effects of temperature on the fluidity of the membrane.
