  1. Mentioning the physical states of the reactants and products. For eg. s for solid, l for liquid and aq for an aqueous solution. If a gas is evolved during the reaction, it is indicated by an arrow pointing upwards and if a precipitate is formed, an arrow pointing downwards.
  2. Mentioning the molecular formulae of the reactants and products.
  3. Mentioning special conditions like heat, pressure or presence of catalyst above or below the arrow joining the reactant and product sides.
