On February 24, 1826, the East India Company and the Burmese monarch, His Majesty the King of Ava, signed the Treaty of Yandaboo.
In Yandaboo, a Burmese hamlet near the capital Ava, the British and the Burmese signed a peace treaty. The following were the main clauses of the treaty:
- Assam should be under British control.
- Leave the Caviar and Maintain Hills regions alone.
- Allow Ava and Calcutta diplomatic representatives to meet.
- Sign a commercial agreement as soon as feasible.
- Even though it was a significant adjustment between the two giants of the time, it served as a warning to the kingdom, which had to agree to relinquish their claims to Assam and Manipur, oppose the British choice of Manipur's king, and refuse to give up the Rakhine area in favor of the Taninhaye Coast.
- The Burmese emperor had no option but to surrender to the British in the end.
- It is a modest Burmese-British peace treaty, but it has had a huge impact on the Ahom kingdom's socio-political history, as well as Assam's demographic history and the end of the Ahom kingdom's 600-year rule.
