I) The main sources of information is indica by megasthenes , who was an ambassador of the Greek ruler seleucus nicator in the court of Chandragupta Maurya. selucus was the commander of Alexander .

2) the other sources are - I) puranas , ii) Buddhist and jain literature, iii) kautilya's Arthashastra, iv) Ashoka' s edicts (inscription) on rocks and stone pillars and (v) remains of the monuments.
