Income method: An individual is considered to be poor when his income level falls below the minimum level which is needed to satisfy the basis needs.

Expenditure Method: While calculating the poverty line in India, minimum level of clothing, fuel, footwear, food requirement, educational & medical requirement are considered for subsistence.
