When talking to Launcelot, Shylock warns him that there is a big difference between Shylock and Bassanio, his new master. Shylock feels that Bassanio is not as kind or lenient as Shylock has been towards Launcelot. Instead, Bassanio will make Launcelot work hard and he will not be able to eat as heartily as he did at Shylock's place, or even sleep all through the day.

Next, while speaking to Jessica, Shylock says that he cannot allow a big eater and slow worker to continue being his servant. Shylock is happy to let Launcelot go to Bassanio, so that he can help 'waste' his new master's borrowed money. Here Shylock hints at Bassanio's foolishness and lavish lifestyle. Bassanio is in debt, but still employing a servant. Shylock, the rich money lender is portrayed in sharp contrast to the extravagant debtor Bassanio.
