mercury is used to indicate the temp in Manuel thermometers it has a high sensitivity to heat therefore changes even when the slightest change in temperature occurs and it has a uniform expansion. it can be used to measure high temp cuz of its high boiling point however it is not in use that much nowadays because it is toxic.
