"Social stratification means division of the people of a society based on their caste, creed, community, religion, status etc.

Merits

1. Helps in the proper understanding of the society.

2. Stratification is advantageous for the class occupying the topmost rank of this division as it bestows on them name and prosperity.

3. Stratification helps in assignment of occupation of people. Hence through this people know what task they should perform. Eg - A Brahman knows that he has to perform the task of a puja and holy practices.

Demerits

1. Stratification divides the society in unwanted divisions

2. The upper castes receive all the love and respect whereas those belonging to the lower strata of the society were looked upon with disrespect and neglect

3. It lead to inequality and injustice in the society leading to the exploitation of the common people
