Advantages:

* Typically, information is fairly easy to obtain from administrative data.

* The outcome measure is clearly defined -- the patient either died or did not.

Disadvantages:

* Mortality rates are fairly crude measures of outcome. The patient can survive, but still receive poor care or have a poor functional outcome. The patient can die due to the underlying disease, but received expert care. The patient can die due to a totally unrelated incident (auto accident) and still be counted as a death in the study.

* Numerous factors play a role in the outcome, including the underlying condition of the patient; how sick the patient was when admitted; all aspects of care delivered prior to, during and after the acute episode; and the length of time of the measurement.
