Metal carbonates decompose on heating to give metal oxide and carbon di oxide. Which of the metal carbonates is most stable thermally ?
a) MgCo3
b) CaCo3
c) SrCo3
d) BaCo3

d) BaCo3 is most stable thermally.
The size of Ba 2+ is the largest as compared to Mg, Ca and Sr ions. Since Ba ions are larger in size, it forms more stable carbonate with carbonate ion by forming more stable lattice. Therefore BaCO3 is thermally more stable.
