Metals are those elements which tend to loose electrons and form positive ions.

Non-metals are those elements which tend to gain electrons to form negative ions.

All acids contain H⁺ ions. It means only non-metals can combine with Hydrogen to form acids.

Now, When a metal reacts with an acid, Hydrogen is displaced and an ionic compound if formed.

For example,

2Na + 2HCl ------> 2NaCl + H₂

Here, if instead of Na, it was a non-metal, it could not combine with Cl as both had to loose electrons.

Hence, only metals react with acids and non-metals don't.
