Besides the dissociation adsorption of Me - S - Me on the catalyst surface, n-butane will undergo the dehydrogenation reaction and as a result producing the reactive hydrocarbon chain:

CH3 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 - - - - - - - - >  –CH=CH–CH=CH–

The condensation reaction of this dehydrogenated hydrocarbon product with the catalyst of the surface of dimethylsulfide will result in the production of the thiophene ring:

–CH=CH–CH=CH– + Kat[S] - - - - - - -> thiophene   + Cat [ ].

When desorbed from the catalyst, the thiophene will take a portion away of the S and will result in the deactivation of the catalyst. Then resulfurization process will take place.
