Environmental pollution is a great concern for human and ecological health, which has adverse role on demographic change. Therefore, in order to achieve a sustainable environment, pollution should be either completely eliminated when possible or reduced both locally and globally. Industry is a main source of environmental pollution. The traditional practice of reducing pollution is treatment of pollutants before they are discharged to the environment. Pollution reduction method is usually costly and not highly efficient. Moreover, the sludge produced due to the reduction measures becomes a new concern for the environment and safe handling involves significant cost.

As a result pollution prevention is considered as a preferential technique over pollution reduction methods in US and Canada. Most of the present pollution prevention methodologies practiced in industry have some degree of limitation, which may lead to the selection of non-optimal process in terms of environmental and economic benefits. The objective of the present research is to develop a pollution prevention methodology addressing the limitations of present methods and to make the environment healthier and sustainable.

This methodology is applicable to any process and manufacturing industry during new design and retrofit stage to prevent pollution before it is generated and to select the best process option from both the environmental and economic perspectives
