When methyl magnesium iodide is reacted with ethanol , methane ( CH_{4} ) is formed .

  • Methyl group in the Grignard reagent has a lone pair with a negative charge. This methyl group attacks the hydrogen atom of the -OH group of the ethyl alcohol and takes that hydrogen atom towards the methyl group .
  • Thus methane is formed from the reaction .
